UTAH WEATHER: icy start gives way to a cool fall day
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4) – Happy Wednesday! Many areas of Utah, including our mountain valleys like Cache and Iron counties, had a freezing start to the day!
The back of the Wasatch saw these 30s start the day, and our crisp, crisp fall air will stick around today. After the passage of our cold front and the persistent early morning showers, daytime highs will only climb to a low of 60 today along the Wasatch front. High temperatures will target 50 years today in eastern and parts of central Utah, with even our hottest location, St. George, well below average with a high of 79 expected. Storms and wet weather will target eastern Utah today with the rest of the state remaining cool and drier.
The cooler air is the result of this northern flow following a cold front that swept through the state. As the morning showers lingered pushing eastward, partly cloudy skies will dominate the remainder of our cool Wednesday. The gusts of wind helped push some of the smoke from the wildfires eastward, so air quality is expected to improve for today. Clean air is expected in the monitored counties, even with a light smoke attempting to seep into the valleys.
Nightly lows will again be cold with lows 40 in Salt Lake City and at higher elevations such as Park City the lows will move towards freezing again. In generally cooler valleys, severe frost will be possible this evening including Cache County and the Bear River Valley. There is a slight chance that we will see persistent mountain showers Thursday and Friday, mostly in eastern Utah, but overall calmer conditions are expected. Expect dry conditions and a warming tendency for the remainder of the work week. You can also expect nearer-normal temperatures, which are in the low to mid-70s in northern Utah at this time of year, by weekends.
At the end of the line ? A cool fall day ahead for much of the state with below average temperatures and drying out conditions.
